Ten years after its debut, Google Now Launcher is being discontinued

The Google Now Launcher is being removed from all devices after roughly ten years. Google Now Launcher (GNL) will be totally discontinued by the end of April, the company has announced. The information on the launcher’s discontinuation was taken by 9to5Google from the updated Google app. The company has informed the users about the recent development via message. Reportedly, GNL will be discontinued on all Android devices. GNL was unique due to the fact that it provided quick access to Google Now cards.

Possible reasons behind the discontinuation of Now Launcher

Back in 2012, Google rolled out the Now Launcher. Initially, the company introduced the Now Launcher to Nexus and Google Play Edition devices. Alter on, it was introduced across all Android devices. Soon after this other OEMs rolled out the launcher for their devices. In order to use GNL as a primary launcher, users were required to download it separately from the Play Store.

For smartphones running Android 4.1 or higher, Google unveiled the launcher. Google, however, ceased supporting GNL as the default Launcher for Android devices in 2017. OEMs were asked by the company to create their own solutions. While GNL enjoyed years of success, the introduction of Pixel smartphones caused Google to focus more on the Pixel launcher. As a result, the Now Launcher received updates less frequently.

Third-party launchers are the option

Well, if any user wishes to use the Launcher app, they can continue using the Now Launcher without updating the app. Since an app update would lead to the eternal closure of the app. Besides this, users can shift to third-party launchers. Various third-party launchers are equipped with advanced features as well as they provide support for a longer duration.
