Tesla now accepts Dogecoin – but you can’t purchase cars

It’s no secret that Tesla CEO Elon Musk has a thing for cryptocurrencies, and he’s particularly fond of Dogecoin. This is still considered a so-called memecoin, but now you can even buy it from Tesla – mind you, only merchandise. Elon Musk has repeatedly banged the drum for Dogecoin on Twitter, and the Tesla boss has repeatedly sent semi-ironic tweets about it. A year ago, they even called the US Securities and Exchange Commission into action, but ultimately the Tesla and SpaceX boss could not be proven to have acted improperly.

Dogecoin has been an integral part of the cryptocurrency scene ever since, and Musk announced last December that Dogecoin would be ennobled by accepting them for transactions. After that, Tesla will see how things develop, Musk said at the time. As mentioned, you will not be able to buy cars in this way, because the payment option via Dogecoin should only apply in the car manufacturer’s merchandise shop.

Dogecoin payment is here now

As is so often the case, Musk announced this on Twitter, and of course you have to be careful, because the eccentric Tesla boss writes a lot on Twitter when the day is long and not all of it should be taken at face value cryptocurrency. But now the time has come Musk announced that Tesla merchandise can now be purchased with Dogecoin. Of course, it’s no surprise that Dogecoin’s price skyrocketed shortly after the announcement.

However, other major cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Ethereum remained unimpressed, although it is certainly not a disadvantage for other coins if another unit gains acceptance. Of course, with Dogecoin you have to ask yourself whether this is more than an inside joke for Musk fans – because whether someone will suddenly use Dogecoin as a means of payment and investment remains questionable.
