The 46xx battery could be produced in large quantities by Samsung SDI next year
Back in May 2022, we learned that the South Korean tech giant Samsung was working on 46mm diameter cylindrical batteries. Back then, the company asserted that the design of the batteries will be complete by 2023. According to some recent pieces of information, the batteries will be ready for mass production by early next year. This information was shared by Yoon Ho Choi, the CEO of Samsung SDI.
This information was shared at the InterBattery 2024 event. The event was organized from March 3 to March 8 2024 in Seoul, South Korea. The CEO mentioned that all the homework for mass production has been completed. When asked about the project’s investment, the CEO didn’t share any details. However, he mentioned that it is more than the last year.
At the moment, we have no information regarding the height of 46mm diameter batteries. According to some previous reports, the company was testing four different height options: 40mm, 60m, 90mm, and 120mm. To put it simply, a battery with a diameter of 46mm and a height of 40m will be termed a 4640 battery. Tesla utilizes a 4680 battery in its vehicles. It means that the battery has a 46mm diameter and 80mm height.
Samsung can provide batteries to Tesla and other brands if it is successful with manufacturing the 4680 batteries. In this way, it can earn huge profits. During the function, Choi added that solid-state battery production is expected to begin in 2027 and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in 2026 by Samsung SDI.
