The Witcher 3: Free Remastered Update brings FSR 4.0 and more

CD Projekt Red is launching a free remaster of The Witcher 3 in September 2026. The new edition not only delivers technical upgrades such as DLSS 4.5 and FSR 4.0, but also profound gameplay improvements.

Major update for Geralt

Just in time for the current Gamescom, the developers are announcing a technical and gameplay revision of the role-playing game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The remaster will be released on September 29, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and, for the first time, for the Nintendo Switch 2 and via Battle.net. The good news for owners of the original game: you will receive the update for all systems mentioned (for their respective version) completely free of charge.

The modernization brings with it numerous technical upgrades. On current systems, the game benefits from high-resolution textures, improved lighting and modern upscaling technologies such as DLSS 4.5 and AMD FSR 4.0. The latter technology is intended to particularly benefit mobile devices and handhelds. The developers are also integrating Xbox Play Anywhere, which allows game states to be seamlessly switched between Xbox consoles and the PC. Focus on playful innovations

Like the development studio CD Project Red reports, the upcoming remaster is not just limited to the visuals. The combat system is undergoing a major overhaul with new animations and finishers designed to make fights more fluid. There is also a completely redesigned talent tree, improved movement in the game world and a “transmogrification” system for armor. The latter allows players to customize the appearance of equipment without changing its stats.

At the same time, all owners of the main game now receive free access to the two previous major expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. The developers are also announcing a new expansion called Songs of the Past for 2027. The new story takes players to the rural region of Latvia, which is considered the home of the well-known character Dandelion.

Looking into the future of the series

As part of the new expansion, the protagonist Geralt receives a chain as a new weapon to effectively defend himself in close combat against previously unknown monsters. This adds a new tactical component to the proven arsenal. To implement the various new content, the main studio received targeted support from other developers. The remaster is being created in direct collaboration with the Yigsoft team.

Meanwhile, the external studio Fools Theory is working on the upcoming expansion. The reason for this outsourcing is that the main studio is already concentrating on the development of the successor The Witcher 4. The release of the next big title in the series is currently scheduled for 2028, but that is by no means set in stone.
