Thunderbird: The final version is due to arrive in October
Mozilla is now finally making good on the promise it made two years ago: The popular email client Thunderbird will be available in a final version for Android smartphones in October – a beta can already be tested.
Transforming K-9 Mail
It’s been over two years since Mozilla announced that it would be bringing Thunderbird to Android. The last progress report on the Android version was in June 2024, which also mentioned a launch originally planned for June. This date has been postponed, but progress has continued. Interested users have been able to test the beta version of Thunderbird on their Android devices for a few days now.
One of the biggest advantages of the new app is the easy transfer of email accounts from Mozilla-acquired K-9 Mail to Thunderbird for Android. Users who have the latest version of K-9 Mail installed can import their accounts directly into Thunderbird without additional logins or complicated setup. Mozilla also plans to enable seamless data transfer between Thunderbird on the desktop and the Android version in the future.
The beta phase for Thunderbird on Android will be kept relatively short. According to the official roadmap, the first beta version has been available since September 30th, while the first “release candidate” is expected in the third week of October. The final release is scheduled for the fourth week of October.
Beta available
The beta version of Thunderbird for Android already offers all the basic functions of a modern email client. Users can set up their email accounts simply by entering their email address and password, or perform manual server settings for more complex setups. Thunderbird makes it possible to receive emails, read them, switch between accounts and move messages to different folders.
Push notifications for new emails, editing drafts, composing and sending messages, as well as common functions such as replying, forwarding and deleting are also integrated. If you would like to test the beta version, you can download Thunderbird for Android Download Google Play Store or to more recent versions Access Github.
