TikTok is banned on government devices due to app blockage considerations in the US.

Tiktok has been accused of spying by the US government due to its origins from China. Although it didn’t actually get banned from the US, the government isn’t that satisfied with the app’s existence. The US House of Representatives has prohibited Tiktok from being installed on government-related devices.

According to Reuters, the US administration has confirmed the ban on applications on government-related devices. The ban indicates that government employees are restricted from installing and using applications on their devices.

“House’s Chief Administration Officer (CAO)” referred to high security issues as a reason for the application ban. The app was ordered to be uninstalled from any government device. However, the implementation of the ban on the application is under discussion for now. For now, people who are not associated with the government can use the application.

Former President Donald Trump announced the application ban for 2020. However, it was not implemented. In the beginning of this year, the FCC suggested to both Google and Apple that they delete the application from their app stores. It was argued in a letter as “sophisticated surveillance” against the Chinese government.

It was assured by the parent company of TikTok that a Chinese employee could access the data of users of the application in the US.

These staff members are, however, “subject to a number of sophisticated safety controls and authorised certification standards,” according to ByteDance.

As part of its commitment, ByteDance promised to make improvements that “completely protect user data and U.S. national safety interests.” The business said that it is working with Oracle to finalise “new enhanced data security safeguards.”

Last month, ByteDance moved US user data to Oracle servers, but it is still suing US and Singapore data centres for backup. The company says it will “remove U.S. users’ confidential documents from our own servers and completely pivot to Oracle cloud servers located in the U.S.” once this deal is finalised.

It’s unclear at this time whether TikTok will be fully outlawed in the United States.
