To refocus in the face of market challenges, Riot Games reduced staff by 11%

According to some recent pieces of information, Riot Games, the company behind the famous ‘League of Legends’, is about to undergo a round of massive layoffs. Reportedly, 11% of employees, accounting for 530 employees, will be impacted. Well, this is quite shocking news for the gaming industry. It highlights the economic challenges that are presented to successful digital game publishers.

Tencent Holdings subsidiary Riot Games has made a name for itself in the online gaming industry. But the business is currently having to deal with the hard reality of a sluggish market. Given the high inflation rates, players prefer to use a few favorite titles and avoid purchasing new ones. Riot is not the only company going through this hardship. Last year, Electronic Arts reduced staff by 6%. It indicates a more general trend of budget cuts in the industry.

Dylan Jadeja, the CEO of the company, unveils some critical issues within the company in his letter to employees. According to him, Riot Games has lost its focus. The costs have grown unsustainably. This acknowledgement is a rare reflection of the internal operations of a big gaming company since the company’s user base has always identified it as unbeatable.

With the recent development, the company intends to improve its famous titles like “Valorant,” “Teamfight Tactics,” “League of Legends,” and “Wild Rift.” But what really highlights the extent of this strategic change is the discontinuation of fresh game development under “Riot Forge” and the reduction of staff and some features in “Legends of Runeterra.”

Riot’s change of direction coincides with Tencent’s larger expansions into the gaming sector, which include investments in other massive American gaming companies like Epic Games. Riot Games’ recent restructuring may be a sign of things to come for the industry as businesses try to adjust to the changing gaming landscape and financial constraints.
