Too weak for GTA 6 in 4K at 60 fps

After the launch of the PS5 Pro, many fans are feeling disillusioned. On the one hand, this is due to the high price of the console, and on the other hand, to the upgrades, which some players feel are not enough. GTA 6 in high resolution and at 60 fps could at least remain a dream. Sony

PS5 Pro on the way

Delivery of the new console begins on November 7th. Interested customers can pre-order the PlayStation 5 Pro directly from Sony’s online shop from September 26th. Other retailers will only be able to do this from October 10th. Experts expect the Pro version to be a sales success. This is also supported by the fact that the disc drive, which is available separately, is already sold out at some online retailers.

Doubts about high resolutions and frame rates

According to PlayStation chief architect Mark Cerny, players with the Pro console will no longer have to make compromises between graphics and performance. Playing in high resolutions and at high frame rates should no longer be a problem.

The tech specialists at Digital Foundry, however, have some doubts. After analyzing the PS5 Pro hardware, they are quite sure that there will be limitations. When asked by IGN whether GTA 6 will run in 4K and at 60 fps on the Sony console, they give a crystal clear answer.

No. Grand Theft Auto games have always performed complex simulations that place heavy demands on the CPU, which is why every GTA game initially launched at 30 frames per second (or less!) on the target platforms. […] This is not a GPU problem, it is a CPU problem. Richard Leadbetter – Technology Editor, Digital Foundry

Console CPU too weak

The worlds of GTA are highly complex. Streets with lots of car and pedestrian traffic have to be simulated or calculated. Since GTA 6 will be significantly more demanding in this respect than its predecessors, it requires a high-performance CPU that is able to carry out all the necessary calculations and at the same time still has resources left to increase the frame rate.

However, the PS5 Pro only has a Zen 2 with eight cores, which offers a maximum clock frequency of 3.85 GHz and is therefore probably not up to the task. Leadbetter only sees a chance for the high frame rate at 4K if Rockstar Games manages to get their game to 60 fps on the ‘normal’ PS5 consoles. So far, however, there have been no signs of this.

PS5 Pro has to prove itself

Even though the release of GTA 6 is still a while away, the title will be an important test for the PlayStation 5 Pro. Because the game from Rockstar Games will show whether buying the new console is really worth it. In terms of graphics and performance, the Pro version has to clearly outshine the ‘normal’ PS5.
