Touch and Pressure Sensitivity in the iPhone 16 Capture Button Allows for Zooming and Focusing

In September 2023, we learned that the Cupertino-based tech giant Apple will add a new ‘Capture Button’ to the iPhone 16 series. Despite the initial leaks and reports, the function of the new dedicated button was unknown. However, there were some hints about the possible functions of the new button. In December last year, Mark Gurman claimed that it would be used for recording videos.

As of now, we have received some fresh details about the functions of the Capture Button. The new information comes from The Information. Reportedly, the new button has a mechanical nature in contrast to a capacitive one. According to the details, the button is responsive to touch and pressure. Users of the iPhone will be able to focus with a gentle press, start a recording with a more vigorous press, and zoom in and out by swiping left and right on the button.

When it comes to the location of the button, reports suggest that the Capture Button will be available on the right side of the device, just under the Power button. It is a perfect spot since it will be accessible to fingers when the device is held in a horizontal position. Currently, the US models of iPhones are equipped with the mmWave antenna in the above-mentioned position. The inclusion of the new button will replace the antenna on the left side of the iPhone.

The company assumes that the new button on the iPhone 16 models could prove to be a unique selling point for the series. Its introduction aims to further promote the iPhone as a horizontal video-shooting camera substitute. The company has not taken the final notes regarding the design of the iPhone 16. In the future, the function and design of the button might change.
