Twitter To Remove Inactive Accounts To Make Usernames Available For Public

Twitter has started verifying accounts by sending emails to the users that are inactive, the company will take action from December 11 and remove accounts and usernames that are inactive for more than 6 months.

Twitter has unveiled its plans through a spokesperson who spoke to Verge about the plans, The company is sending emails actively to the users and cleaning up the platform to build trust and credibility. Twitter’s spokesperson in a statement said, “As part of our commitment to serving the public conversation, we’re working to clean up inactive accounts to present more accurate, credible information people can trust across Twitter. Part of this effort is encouraging people to actively log-in and use Twitter when they register an account, as stated in our inactive accounts policy”.

It will take several months to start and finish the cleanup campaign, however, people who are using twitter actively wouldn’t be affected by this. If you are waiting for a particular username to become available, you need to actively check the availability of the username in order to grab it. The system will start deleting the accounts from December 11 onwards and you might come across a username you wished for initially.

According to Twitter’s spokesperson, “We have begun proactive outreach to many accounts who have not logged into Twitter in over six months to inform them that their accounts may be permanently removed due to prolonged inactivity.”
