Ubisoft accidentally leaves the cat out of the sack: a Far Cry TV series is under development at FX. With Rob Mcelhenney and Noah Hawley, two series sizes are to implement the video game franchise as an anthology drama.

Ubisoft has apparently unintentionally unveiled a planned TV adaptation of its popular Far Cry series. The publisher published a press release about a series on FX Networks, but quickly removed it. The Far Cry series is to be designed as an anthology drama, in which each season presents a new world with different characters-at least if the series makes it into several seasons.

This approach corresponds to the independent narrative structure of the video game series, in which each game tells a completed story. The Far Cry franchise has been comprising six main games since 2004 and numerous offshoots that move players in various locations from tropical islands to Himalaya to dystopian future scenarios. Each game presents a charismatic antagonist and a unique game world.

Reddit users saw the Ubisoft announcement and shared the details on social media. The deleted press release contained concrete information about the occupation and the production companies involved, which indicates that the project is already well advanced.

Heads behind production

Rob Mac (formerly Rob Mcelhenney) and Noah Hawley act as co-creators. Mac is known for the cult series “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”, which he has been responsible for since 2005 and in which he plays the leading role. The series is considered one of the longest running sitcoms in US television history. In addition, he co-creeped the Apple TV+series “Mythic Quest”, a comedy about video game developers who underlines his connection to the gaming world. Noah Hawley is considered one of the most renowned series makers in the industry and created the award-winning FX series “Fargo” and “Legion”.

His adaptation of the Coen brothers films “Fargo” as an anthology series brought him several Emmy nominations and established him as a master of complex narrative structures. He is currently working on the alien series “Alien: Earth”, which is to celebrate its premiere at FX in 2025. Hawley takes on the role of the showrunner, while Mac should also be seen in front of the camera. The choice of FX as a transmitter is very obvious: the broadcaster is known for high -quality and dark drama series and already Hawley’s home for his successful projects “Fargo” and “Legion”.

In recent years, FX has established itself as a platform for demanding genre series that achieve both critical applause and commercial success. With series such as “The Last of Us” and “Fallout”, video game adaptations are currently booming, which should give the Far Cry project additional tailwind. The gaming industry has increasingly rely on high-quality TV adaptations in recent years after previous attempts had often disappointed.
