Upside Down Cake: Codename for Android 14 “U” is already set

Traditionally, Google always codenames the versions of its Android mobile operating system. Well over a year before its release, it is now clear what the codename for Android 14 or Android “U” will be. if XDA Developers and members of the portal’s community found out when they took a closer look at the Android Gerrit, Google’s own developers of Android 14 apparently internally speak of “Upside Down Cake”. The version control has finally arrived at “U”, but the selection of English names from the field of desserts is rather limited.

Android 14 “U” doesn’t exactly make code name searches easy

Since few desserts have a catchy name that starts with the letter “U”, Google probably chose the name “Upside Down Cake”. Using a “sweet” name has a long tradition in the Android development team, even though the designations are only used internally these days. So-called “Upside Down Cake” is commonly made in the US and UK using canned pineapple slices and candy cherries where the ingredients are essentially placed “upside down” in a baking pan and then “tumbled” onto the plate after baking and served.

Since Android 10, Google has only officially given its Android release numbers as version designations. Previously, for more than a decade, a letter and therefore an appropriate candy or dessert was always used as a code name. The release of Android 13, which internally uses the code name “Tiramisu”, is currently imminent. Here is a complete list of all known codenames of the different versions of Android:
