Vivo and Nokia signed a patent license deal for 5G technology

According to some recent pieces of information, Vivo and Nokia have signed a new patent deal. Reportedly, the two companies publicized their multi-year patent cross-licensing agreement. It indicates the end of a legal battle over 5G technology. Just a few weeks ago, we learned that Nokia and Oppo signed a similar deal, marking the end of a similar dispute.

As part of the new agreement, the basic cellular technology patents of Nokia will now be accessible to Vivo. However, Vivo will pay for using these patents. Notably, “catch-up” fees covering the duration of the dispute will also be included in these payments. The agreement now resolves any lingering legal issues between the two corporations, which is a positive thing.

In case you don’t know, a legal conflict was raised by Nokia against the companies that fall under the BBK Electronics group. Nokia claimed that Oppo and Vivo violated 5G wireless communication technology patents. The matter was later modified into a lawsuit that resulted in the defeat of these companies in court. Eventually, Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus, and Realme were ordered to leave the German market. As of now, the recent 5G patent deal between Oppo, Vivo, and Nokia can pave the way for these companies to operate in the German market once again. Sales of the OnePlus 12 and 12R have already begun in Germany.

President of Nokia Technologies Jenni Lukander remarked, “We feel honored to have struck a deal with Vivo that demonstrates mutual respect for each other’s intellectual property rights.” “With our partnership, we hope to provide their users with even more innovation globally.” Xianwen Xu, general manager of Vivo, also stated the company’s satisfaction with the deal and emphasized the company’s dedication to R&D while offering customers high-tech products.

With this deal, Vivo will return to one of the key markets in Europe. One thing to notice here is that, in the last 13 months, Nokia has signed its sixth major smartphone licensing agreement. In the past, the company signed similar deals with other big companies like Apple, Samsung, OPPO, Honor, and Huawei.
