Vivo Patents New Rollable Smartphone

Compared with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3, it is estimated that several foldable phones will be launched next month. After exposing a patent for a dual-folding phone with a laser projection keyboard last week, technology media LetsGoDigital recently discovered a new patent submitted by Vivo [PDF], showing a rollable phone.

The patent is titled “Electronic Equipment” and was submitted to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on May 26, 2021. The 21-page document was released on December 2, 2021.

Pat talked about scalable screen Vivo smartphones, there is a large scalable display. The width of the display can be expanded to form a display the size of a tablet computer. This device has many similarities with the OPPO rollable smartphone that was launched as a concept phone at the end of last year.

By using a rollable display, the device is as portable as a normal cell phone in its most compact form. Compared with foldable smartphones, this is a significant advantage, because the thickness of foldable phones after folding is still twice that of ordinary phones.

Based on these patented images, graphic designer Jermaine Smit (Tubing Channel Concept Creator) created a series of product renderings for LetsGoDigital to better display the image of the Vivo scrollable smartphone.

This is a rather rectangular phone. When the screen is pushed out, the casing is pulled apart, so to speak, allowing the user to hold the device well on both the left and right sides. Inside, a rotation axis is realized on the far left. In addition, a track system was applied, and a support plate was used to support the place where the flexible wire mesh was pulled out.

In the upper right corner, a punching camera is applied for taking selfies. Because this part of the body will move with the movement of the display, the position of the hole-punch camera will not change no matter how the smartphone is used.

On the back, a vertical camera can be seen on the far left. It seems to consist of three cameras, a flash, and an additional sensor. Nevertheless, Vivo can of course decide to change the camera settings of this scrollable smartphone. However, the position is fixed, and placing it in the leftmost corner, will not interfere with the components required for the roll-up process of the flexible screen.
