Vodafone Makes History with the First Satellite Video Call from a Smartphone

While carriers like T-Mobile are just beginning to test satellite messaging, Vodafone has taken a huge leap forward. The company achieved a world-first by placing a satellite-connected video call using a standard smartphone.
Rowan Chesmer, an engineer at Vodafone, made this groundbreaking call from a remote area in Wales to Vodafone Group Chief Executive, Margherita Della Valle. The call wasn’t just a simple test of messaging or basic voice communication—it showcased full mobile broadband capability via satellite.
Vodafone is calling this the “only satellite service in the world today that offers mobile broadband directly to multiple normal 4G or 5G smartphones.” And they might be right. No other carrier has publicly tested mobile satellite connectivity at this level. T-Mobile, for instance, plans to introduce calling capabilities on its Starlink service in the future, but Vodafone’s solution sets itself apart by promising a complete mobile broadband experience.
Expanding Connectivity Across Europe and Beyond
Vodafone plans to roll out its direct-to-smartphone broadband satellite service commercially later this year, starting in Europe. The service will gradually expand through 2026, filling coverage gaps in rural areas and even surrounding seas.
“Direct-to-mobile broadband satellite is a fully integrated extension of Vodafone’s existing land-based fibre and mobile networks, providing reliable digital connectivity in rural coverage not spots, including vast stretches of surrounding sea,” Vodafone explained in its press release.
Powered by AST SpaceMobile Technology
To make this innovation possible, Vodafone has partnered with AST SpaceMobile, which provides low Earth orbit satellite connectivity. The setup includes five AST SpaceMobile satellites, known as Bluebird 1–5, which deliver mobile broadband connectivity directly to everyday smartphones. These satellites can achieve peak data speeds of up to 120 Mbps.
Unlike older satellite services, Vodafone’s solution doesn’t require users to purchase special hardware like satellite phones or dishes. Instead, regular smartphones can seamlessly switch between satellite and ground-based networks. It’s a game-changer for those living in or traveling through areas with little to no traditional mobile coverage.
What’s Next?
This milestone positions Vodafone as a leader in satellite-based mobile broadband. With plans to expand its coverage, this service has the potential to revolutionize connectivity for rural and remote regions, offering the same experience as existing 4G and 5G networks.
