WalMart partners with Microsoft to use its cloud and AI technology

Walmart announced on Tuesday that the company has inked an agreement with Microsoft Corporation for wider use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cloud technology.

The company has entered into a strategic partnership with Microsoft in order to leverage its cloud technology and AI technology to build better solutions in order to contain its faster-growing rival Amazon.com.

The five-year partnership agreement would provide Walmart with all Microsoft’s cloud solutions and AI solutions including Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365, the retail giant would use technological capabilities to improve customers shopping experience by making it faster, reliable and automated, the company said.

Walmart said during this partnership, Microsoft and Walmart engineers will work together in order to migrate a significant portion of Walmart as well as samsclub.com to Azure.

Since Walmart is focused on expanding and doubling its e-commerce presence to better compete with Amazon, Microsoft is developing the technology which would eliminate the checkout lines and cashiers from the stores, Reuters reported last month.

Microsoft’s technology is focused on improving the performance of retailers and better compete with Amazon Go which is the most automated store format in the e-commerce industry.

The software and windows maker has showcased its sample technology in front of retailers globally, the company had talks with Walmart before it inked collaboration between the two, by utilizing this partnership Walmart plans to improve its overall strategic position against Amazon, the company wants to expand its retail ambitions, expertise in data while boosting its online presence.

Microsoft may want to sell its retail solutions to other giants like Alibaba, however, there weren’t any talks held in this regard lately.
