Website Launched for Reporting Cybercrime

Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Sindh Zone has launched a website for reporting cybercrime incidents. The aim of the website is to help people who become victims of ever-increasing cybercrime issues.

The launch of the website was announced by FIA Sindh Zone Director Dr Amir Ahmed as he attended a press conference at the FIA office in Karachi.

As per Dr Ahmed, FIA Sindh Zone Cybercrime Circle received almost 2000 cybercrime related complaints in 2017. These complaints can be divided in three categories.

Blackmailing, harassment and defamation through social media= 76% cases

Financial fraud= 14% cases

Threatening calls= 5% cases

Email hacking and spoofing= Remaining Cases

Dr. Ahmed said, “Many businesses takes place in the virtual world now. Social media has surpassed any other form of dialogue as it is being used for diverse purposes of communication. The information technology and virtual space are also being used by criminal elements in committing cybercrimes.”

For the first time, a platform is provided for cybercrime victims to register their complaints.

Ahmed added, “People living anywhere in Sindh can lodge their complaints to us on our website.

Ahmed encouraged people to come forward saying, “We think people should not remain silent over cybercrimes and should come forward to register complaints.”

Most of the affectees of cybercrime were small teenage girls, women, and kids. Now, these people and others can use the website to voice their issues.

Dr. Ahmed informed, “The format to lodge a complaint is user-friendly and available in English, Urdu, and Sindhi.”

Also, he said that complaints filed by family & friends of the victim will also be accepted. The privacy of the informant and victim will be of highest priority to FIA. All complaints will be addressed within 48 working hours.
