What is an eSIM: Normal SIM Card would be replaced by eSIM in the future

What is eSIM?

Everyone knows about SIM card which is used in the smartphones sometimes dual SIM cards in one single smartphone. Technically SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) however; SIM is also used in electronics where it stands for Single Inline Memory (SIM) so you should not confuse with that.

Telecommunication companies identify you by the SIM so they know that who you are and what services you have subscribed if you do not have SIM card, telecom companies cannot identify you hence, cannot allow you to use tower signals for communication.

What is the difference between eSIM and normal SIM

The normal SIM is just as simple as you know it, however, eSIM is different, you must have heard about Apple launching dual-SIM smartphones, and later we came to know that Apple has enabled eSIM chip on the latest smartphones.

Apple actually offers dual SIM in one smartphone, one is the normal SIM and the other one is eSIM.

eSIM is a chip that is already integrated inside the phone unlike a physical SIM, it cannot be removed from the phone. eSIM is the new smart technology which doesn’t require a physical SIM card from the telecom services provider.

The Major difference between eSIM and SIM is as follows;

• SIM is the physical card inserted in the phone, where eSIM is an electronic chip integrated inside the phone.
• SIM card is removable whereas eSIM is non-removable.
• While using SIM card you need to change SIM card to change carrier/Telecom, but using eSIM you just switch between the carriers using eSIM settings.

The new line of iPhones including iPhone XS and iPhones XS Max support eSIM technology, Google pixel phones also support this technology but according to the Verge, unfortunately, only 10 countries have adopted eSIM technology at the moment including US, UK, Germany, Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, Spain, Croatia, Hungry and India.

It is unclear when the eSIM would become popular all over the world, however; the eSIM has many benefits from the security point of view, all good for governments and authorities, including some ease benefits for users.
