WhatsApp Digital Payments Feature Launched

WhatsApp has finally launched payments feature in its app, following months of speculations and trials. WhatsApp made the announcement that its users in Brazil would be able to send and receive money via the app using Facebook App. This is the payment service that was launched by Facebook in 2019.

WhatsApp made the announcement that the payment service which is presently free for consumers to use will operate via a six-digit PIN or fingerprint to complete transactions.

Users would have to link their WhatsApp account to their Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card. The initial local partners include Banco do Brasil, Nubank, and Sicredi. Also, a payment processor Cielo is operating with WhatsApp to complete the transactions.

It noted, “We have built an open model to welcome more partners in the future.”

The news has been surprising for few. It was expected that Facebook Pay for WhatsApp would initially launch in India as WhatsApp was tested this service on Indian users for months. But being stuck in a regulatory maze in India, Facebook decided to launch Facebook Pay for WhatsApp in Brazil.

It seems that with the launch of payments, WhatsApp is going towards a commercial approach.

The company said, “Payments on WhatsApp are beginning to roll out to people across Brazil beginning today and we look forward to bringing it to everyone as we go forward.”
