WhatsApp Tests QR Codes To Share Contacts Without Hassle

WhatsApp is testing QR codes to let users add contacts to the messaging platform, WABetaInfo reports.

The feature appears in beta versions for both iOS and Android, and can be found in the app’s settings menu, which includes options to display your own QR code and scan the codes of other users. Also, QR codes may be revoked if users decide they would no longer share their number with someone.

The beta feature is a long-overdue way to add contacts directly to WhatsApp. Users currently must first add a contact through the Contacts tab in Apple’s Phone app. They can only open WhatsApp after that, and send them a message.

Instead, using a QR code would skip this step and make the process much more convenient, though it is unknown when the feature will turn it into a public release.

WhatsApp has recently introduced new restrictions on the mass transmission of messages in an effort to slow the spread of misinformation on the chat platform, and has also added a group video chat capability for up to eight users at once.
