WhatsApp update: Many new functions for Android Auto & CarPlay

A comprehensive update for WhatsApp significantly improves the integration into Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In addition, the messenger now allows independent use on the iPad and brings new functions for PDFs and status.

New features in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay users will now receive a revised user interface on their car’s infotainment screen. According to WhatsApp, the aim of the update is to make communication while driving safer and to make manual operation of the smartphone at the wheel unnecessary. The new functions allow messages to be read aloud hands-free and answered using voice input. In addition, voice calls can be started directly via the car display. Personal call history and favorite contacts for quick access can now be viewed in the vehicle. The systems transfer the applications directly to the screen to minimize distraction.

Independent login on iPad

As the parent company Meta reports, the current update also closes a gap in tablet use. Users can now register a WhatsApp account directly via the iPad app. In the past, the tablet had to be linked to an already set-up smartphone. After the new setup, the iPad functions as a standalone device. However, one technical limitation remains with the process. For the initial registration, a valid telephone number is still required in order to receive the one-time verification code via SMS. Only after the verification step does the application on the Apple tablet work completely independently of a primary cell phone.

PDF tools and music in status

In addition to the mobile applications, WhatsApp Web and the desktop versions also receive additions. Users can open PDF files directly in the chat window without having to download them to the hard drive. By integrating the Adobe Acrobat software, simple edits such as highlighting passages of text or adding short notes can be carried out. In addition, the messenger is expanding the personalization options for mobile users. Users can now share music tracks from the streaming services Spotify and Apple Music directly in their WhatsApp status. Since Meta is distributing all of the innovations mentioned step by step, it may take a few days until the update is fully available on every device.
