Windows 11 23H2 is shown as outdated

The latest patch day for Windows 11 causes confusion: After installing the update KB5046633, Microsoft suddenly reports that the installed version 23H2 is out of date. Users see an irritating message even though their system is up to date.

Unexpected message after update

That reports that Neowin magazine and has put together some user reports. It looks like only a few Windows 11 users are affected, and they experience the following strange situation: Shortly after installing the latest patch day update for Windows 11 version 23H2, the system suddenly indicates that it is out of date: Affected users see In the Windows update settings the message:

Get the newer version of Windows to stay up to date. Your version of Windows has reached end of support.

The update only came onto the market in autumn 2023 and many users only received it this year. This bizarre error message causes confusion and anger among many users.

Update KB5046633 for Windows 11, released on November 12, 2024, was supposed to fix various problems, including an error in the Task Manager. Instead, it now leads to this new, unexpected complication. As Neowin further reports, this problem occurs with both Windows 11 version 23H2 and 22H2.

But it gets even stranger because the error message refers to a Windows 10 support document. It then says that the system has not received an update for a long time, possibly due to the minimum hardware requirements not being met. The fact is, however, that Windows 11 23H2 will continue to be supported until November 2025. So it’s clearly a mistake on Microsoft’s part. The cause of this is still unclear, but could be related to the recently quietly distributed update KB5001716.

This update was actually intended to inform users about the impending end of support for their Windows version – but of course only where this is actually the case. There is currently no official fix for users seeing this incorrect message. It is expected that Microsoft will release a corrective update soon. Until then, users can ignore the message as long as they are sure their system is up to date.
