Windows 11 update: Copilot key will soon be able to deactivate the function

Microsoft is testing a function for Windows 11 that allows users to deactivate the Copilot button. Since 2024, new computers have been delivered with the AI ​​button as standard. The company will continue to adhere to this requirement in 2026.

Button does not function in the test

Microsoft continues to classify computers as AI PCs only if they have a Copilot button. Devices without the button do not receive this classification, even if they have sufficient performance. Many users criticize the mandatory hardware adjustment. How Windows Latest reported, current pre-release versions of Windows 11 contain an option not to assign a function to the key. The system then responds neither to a short press nor to a long hold.

Return to the right Ctrl key

In addition to the deactivation, Microsoft is planning further adjustments. Users should also be able to assign other functions to the key or use it as a right Ctrl key. This makes it easier to use keyboard shortcuts. However, the company points out possible limitations. When combined with the left shift key, some keyboard shortcuts may respond unreliably. In such cases, the right shift key is recommended. Screen reading programs can also be operated without problems again after adjustment.

History of the unpopular AI button

Microsoft introduced the Copilot button in January 2024 and promoted it as a central access to AI functions. The company drew parallels to the introduction of the Windows key around 30 years ago. First third-party keyboards often integrated the button instead of the context menu key and positioned it to the right of the space bar. In practice, many users rarely use the assistant. With the new deactivation option, Microsoft is responding to this feedback, but is sticking to its hardware strategy.
