Windows terminal improvements to the new version

Microsoft brings new updates for Windows Terminal. Versions 1.22.2702.0 and 1.21.2701.0 fix bugs and bring small improvements. However, an issue in Windows 11 23H2 is delaying the stable version rollout.

New features and bug fixes for Windows Terminal

Microsoft recently released two new updates for its Windows Terminal command line tool. Version 1.22.2702.0 is available for users of the preview version, while users of the stable channel can access version 1.21.2701.0.

The current versions mainly focus on bug fixes and minor improvements. Microsoft has temporarily paused the rollout of stable version 1.21.2701.0. The reason for this is a “pretty annoying hanging problem under Windows 11 23H2”, This is what you can now read on Github. The company is already working on a solution that will soon be distributed via Windows Update.

Important changes in both versions

Key changes in both versions include a fix for an issue with the Alt+Numberpad-Plus keyboard shortcut. This is no longer ignored if EnableHexNumpad is not activated in the registry. In addition, the configuration of the standard input area for the IME (Input Method Editor) has been improved. This allows users to force the terminal to accept English input even if they normally type in another language.

Additional improvements in the preview version

There are some additional improvements in preview version 1.22.2702.0:

  • The “wt x-save” command and the Command Prompt quick fix feature have been re-enabled
  • The tab switcher now shows the color of each tab if one is set
  • The “Clear Buffer” command works as intended again

Standard terminal emulator

Since version 1.15 and Windows 11 22H2, Windows Terminal has replaced Windows Console as the default terminal emulator by default. This underlines the growing importance of the tool for power users and developers in the Windows ecosystem.

Microsoft recommends that all users update to the latest available version to benefit from improvements and bug fixes. The updates can be downloaded either from the Microsoft Store or manually from the official Windows Terminal GitHub repository.
