With Google’s new ‘play as you download’ feature you can play games while they’re downloading

Google, today, held its annual Google for Games Developer Summit. The company unveiled several new tools and solutions. The company also rolled out a new feature – play as you download – where users could play games while they download games. This new feature is available on Android 12 and later operating systems.

According to Google, this ‘play as you download’ is a new feature that “will allow users to get into gameplay in seconds while game assets are downloaded in the background.” Though many think that this new service is of little value since most Android games come in smaller sizes, we still highly value this effort by the company.

The company has also boost game launch time. According to some, the games on an Android 12 or later version would open with at least double speed.

According to Google, this ‘play as you download’ service uses Android’s Incremental File System, a “special-purpose Linux virtual file system that allows execution of a program while its binary and resource files are still being lazily downloaded over the network.”
