Like apps like FaceTime and WhatsApp, users of the social network X may now initiate and receive audio and video calls thanks to a new function that was added to the site last year. X is now opening the feature to more users, but it was previously only accessible to Premium subscribers.
The CEO of the company, Linda Yaccarino, published a post by X engineer Enrique Barragan stating that the platform is gradually allowing users without an X Premium subscription to make audio and video chats. For those who don’t know, X Premium is a paid subscription that grants access to additional services like text formatting, longer video uploads, and post editing. Subscribers see fewer advertising, receive a verified badge, and can reach a wider audience with their postings.
Not simply those who pay will soon be able to make and receive calls using the X app. The function is integrated into direct messaging and functions similarly to other applications that provide phone calls, such Instagram and WhatsApp. Incoming calls appear on the Lock Screen in the same manner as outgoing calls because of integration with the iOS CallKit API.
When the feature was first introduced, it generated a lot of controversy because some users didn’t seem to like the idea of getting calls from strangers. Fortunately, users can limit who can call them or even disable the calling feature. Here’s how to do it:
You have the option to only accept calls from verified users, accounts you follow, and contacts in your address book. Simply flip the “Enable audio and video calling” option off if you want to entirely disable calls on X. No one will be able to call you through X once you do this.
