Xbox division could be for sale: Microsoft is said to be examining options

Microsoft could be about to sell its Xbox gaming division. According to a media report, the group is currently examining various options as to how the part of the company that specializes in gaming should proceed.

Microsoft could sell off its Xbox division entirely

Microsoft has been trying to get its Xbox gaming division back on the right track for some time. Despite the gigantic takeover of Activision-Blizzard a few years ago, it is still difficult to achieve the desired margins in the gaming business. Now a sale is reportedly even an option. According to a report by US Magazine The Information which is based on sources from the Microsoft environment, Redmond is currently considering various options for the future of the Xbox division. In addition to a “spin-off”, a far-reaching restructuring with the aim of establishing Xbox as an independent subsidiary is also conceivable.

Joint venture with external partners planned

According to the three sources cited in the report, Microsoft is also considering setting up a type of joint venture with external partners in order to improve the conditions for a possible purchase. No decision has been made so far and the software giant apparently wants to take its time with it. Microsoft is currently trying to reposition the Xbox division in times of storage crisis and sharply declining sales. Among other things, the management team was almost completely replaced and Asha Sharma was installed as the new boss. The image is to be gradually refreshed, more exclusive titles are planned and there is room to focus more on opening up the hardware ecosystem for the next generation of the Xbox. Recently, Microsoft significantly increased the prices for its Xbox consoles despite the age of the current generation of devices in order to offset the massive increase in storage costs. As expected, this caused sales to fall sharply. At the same time, the plans pursued so far to generate income outside of console sales with subscription models such as Xbox Game Pass and cloud streaming services do not seem to be bearing the hoped-for fruit.
