Xbox Games Are Expanding to PlayStation: Age of Empires, Forza Horizon, and More

More Xbox games are spreading to new platforms, and this time, it’s a big deal for fans of real-time strategy. Two legendary titles, Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition and Age of Mythology: Retold, are officially heading to PlayStation 5. According to Xbox’s announcement on Tuesday, Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition will arrive in Spring 2025, while Age of Mythology: Retold is set to launch in March 2025.

The best part? These games will fully support cross-play between Xbox, Windows PC, and PlayStation 5 players. Updates for the games will also roll out simultaneously across all platforms. For PlayStation users diving into Age of Mythology: Retold, the upcoming Immortal Pillars expansion will be available for purchase, bringing a revamped version of the Chinese faction.

Both Age of Empires and its iconic spinoff, Age of Mythology, are handled by World’s Edge, an Xbox Game Studios team dedicated to revitalizing older classics while creating new entries in the franchise. In recent years, they’ve successfully launched Definitive Editions for Age of Empires, Age of Empires 2, and Age of Empires 3, alongside developing Age of Empires 4 and ambitiously remaking Age of Mythology.

In my review of Age of Mythology: Retold, I wrote:

“…succeeds at not only being a wonderful remake but also moving the series forward, laying the foundation for years of expansions and updates. I’m looking forward to putting dozens and dozens of more hours into Age of Mythology: Retold, as well as eagerly awaiting the new Pantheons that’ll be coming in the months ahead.”

Forza Horizon 5 and More Coming to PlayStation

But that’s not all. Bethesda’s and MachineGames’ highly anticipated Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is also making its way to PlayStation 5, with a planned release date in the first half of this year.

This marks a broader shift in Xbox’s strategy to bring its first-party games to new platforms. As Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has emphasized, Xbox is focused on expanding its reach across PlayStation and Nintendo platforms while boosting profit margins. Many of Xbox’s upcoming titles, including id Software’s DOOM: The Dark Ages, will launch on PlayStation 5 on day one.

Spencer has also stated his desire to keep innovating in hardware, believing that future advancements should give players a compelling reason to choose Xbox consoles over competitors.
