Microsoft’s service for games Xbox Live Gold was once the mainstay of the Redmond Group’s online efforts, but in the times of the Xbox Game Pass, it has not made any real sense for a long time. Now Microsoft is releasing F2P games from being forced to do so.
The Xbox Network dates back to 2002 and for many years a gold subscription was a prerequisite for playing online or multiplayer titles. But since the overwhelming success of Microsoft’s “Netflix for Games”, the Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Live Gold has been a holdover that Microsoft doesn’t quite know what to do with it.
At the beginning of the year, the Redmond company announced a surprising price increase, but this was immediately withdrawn after protests from players and amazement from the media. Microsoft does not want to completely abolish Xbox Live Gold, but a long-overdue step was announced at the end of March, namely the abolition of the gold requirement for free-to-play titles such as Fortnite.
And now the time has come: From now on you no longer need an additional subscription to use more than 50 free-to-play games. The currently supported titles can be found below as reported by VG24/7, more will be added over time.
