Xbox Series X/S Update Adds Dolby Vision In Games

Sharper contrasts, brighter colors, in short: a better picture. As of today, Dolby Vision is also available for gaming on the Xbox Series X and Series S. In addition to specially optimized games, the update should also improve the look of thousands of existing titles.

After the test phase, Dolby Vision will start on the next-gen consoles from Microsoft

Microsoft had already self-confidently advertised at the start of the Xbox Series S and X that it offered the only next-gen console that supports both Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision. While users were provided with support for the 3D audio format right from the launch, Dolby Vision on the next-gen consoles was previously limited to streaming content. After extensive testing in the Xbox Insider Program, Microsoft can now provide the free update that makes Dolby Vision generally available for gaming on the Xbox Series X and Series S.

At the start are loud message to the developers, “more than 100 HDR-title of the next generation for the series X | are optimized S” immediately or available either “soon”. Microsoft once again mentions the preferred title Halo Infinite , which should fully exploit the possibilities of Dolby Vision when it is released. Compared to the gaming magazine Polygon, a company spokesman made another narrowing: “Almost all native HDR titles available today that have been optimized for the Xbox Series X | S, such as Psychonauts 2, Gears 5 and Ori and the Will of the Wisps “will therefore support the dynamic HDR format.

However, after the update, far more titles should cut a better figure. Microsoft claims to have partnered with Dolby to bring a visual update to thousands of existing HDR10 and Auto-HDR games with “new visual enhancement features that leverage Dolby Vision technology”. In addition to the general reference to “Brightness, color, contrast and attention to detail of the next level”, there is no precise information on the range of functions here.

Recommended settings

In addition to the fact that the screen or TV used must of course support Dolby Vision, Microsoft recommends activating functions such as the automatic mode with low latency (ALLM) or the variable refresh rate (VRR) for the best gaming experience. Devices that do not have these features can lead to input delays when playing games in conjunction with Dolby Vision. Then only a deactivation helps.

To check if the display supports Dolby Vision:

  • Press the Xbox button
  • Settings> General> TV and Display Options> 4K TV Details

To activate Dolby Vision:

  • Press the Xbox button
  • Settings> General> TV and display options> Video modes> Dolby Vision for games
