Xiaomi is said to be working on ‘huge’ new batteries
The Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi is apparently working on equipping future devices from its production with batteries that offer what today seems like gigantic capacities. An alleged leak mentions up to 7500mAh.
Xiaomi could significantly increase the battery capacity of its smartphones in the next few years, according to a post by the leak source Digital Chat Station on the Chinese micro-blogging service Weibo. The information is based on sources close to the Chinese manufacturer, whose information allegedly comes from the company’s research department. Xiaomi’s research and development center in Nanjing, China, is currently considering various battery configurations. Digital Chat Station then lists the different variants in a table, including the expected charging times. It is clearly visible that the high capacities are to be offered at the expense of a less aggressive charging curve.
Capacity Charging power Charging time
5000mAh | 120W | 18 minutes |
5500mAh | 100W | 34 minutes |
6000mAh | 120W | 30 minutes |
6500mAh | 100W | 49 minutes |
7000mAh | 120W | 40 minutes |
7500mAh | 100W | 63 minutes |
According to Xiaomi’s plans, it would take longer for the larger batteries to charge. In return, however, there would also be more “juice” available before the respective smartphone has to be connected to the power supply again. At the top end, Xiaomi is planning variants with a 7000mAh battery and 120-watt charging or 7500mAh and 100-watt charging.
With the first variant, the charging process should be completed after 40 minutes, while in the second case it will only be completed after 63 minutes, it is said. Other variants with lower capacities are also supposedly being considered. Like many other manufacturers, Xiaomi wants to achieve the higher capacities of its batteries with modern silicon-carbon cells, among other things, which allow for a higher energy density while the charging speed is somewhat lower.
The first examples of such a trend are already available in the form of devices such as the OnePlus Ace 3 Pro, which has a 6100mAh battery. Vivo, on the other hand, offers a 5500mAh battery based on the new battery technology in its X Fold 3, which is only 4.7 millimeters thin when unfolded.
