You often receive leaks about upcoming smartphones. It is quite exciting when you start knowing the device before the respective company officially announces it. But have you ever heard if a company sues a leakster when s/he shares information about the upcoming device? I never heard of such an incident until today.
In a recent event, a tipster going with the pseudo name Beautiful Technology leaked information about the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra. The information was actually leaked back on August 11, 2020, which led the company to sue this leakster. The company sued him for 1 million yuan ($155,000).
In response to the final verdict, the leakster send an apology note to the company. The letter reads:
“This case was arbitrated by the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission, and it was determined that my actions had violated the confidentiality agreement and caused serious consequences. Xiaomi should be compensated reasonably. I accept the arbitration. As a result, I am willing to take the corresponding responsibility. At the same time, because of the harm that my breach of contract caused to Xiaomi, I would like to extend my sincere sincere thanks to Xiaomi, Mr. Lei Jun, and the employees of Xiaomi who have given me great trust and all Mi Fans. I apologize, sorry.”
The tipster is now bound to pay Xiaomi a sum of 1 million yuan ($155,000), while the court rules that they must also issue a public apology to Xiaomi for the mishap and pay the sum within 30 days verdict.
Interestingly, the leaked video was not posted by the publisher under consideration; it was his mother. According to his mother, “…I saw this thing on my son’s computer. I don’t know where he was going to post, I posted it in that group. It was accidental.” She also said that she didn’t know that her son was in a non-disclosure agreement with Xiaomi.
Now that the company has released the Mi 10 Ultra, it won’t be an issue to share about this device.
