YouTube May Introduce a Cheaper “Premium Lite” Subscription

YouTube is reportedly gearing up to launch a more affordable subscription option called “Premium Lite,” according to Bloomberg. This new tier is designed for users who enjoy YouTube’s vast content library but aren’t necessarily interested in music videos. Think vlogs, tutorials, podcasts, exercise videos, video essays, gameplay walkthroughs, and more.
While the exact pricing hasn’t been confirmed, it’s worth noting that a similar plan was tested between 2021 and 2023 in select countries. During the trial, a user in Australia reported the plan cost 8.99 AUD—roughly half the price of the standard Premium membership—and included some ads.
The Premium Lite plan is expected to roll out first in the US, Australia, Germany, and Thailand. There’s no news yet on when or if it will launch in the UK. If the pricing follows Australia’s model, US users could expect to pay around $7 per month, while UK subscribers might pay approximately £6.50 monthly.
