Subcontinent Word “Jugaad” recognized in Oxford dictionary
It is the legacy of The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) to keep up with the changing language requirements, the dictionary has been continuously updating for years by adding more and more words and slangs into it, not only from English language, the dictionary is being filled with words that are used in other languages such as; Arabic, German, Spanish, Greek, Urdu, Hindi, Tamil, French and some others, even some local languages like; Gujarati.
Now the dictionary officially recognizes the commonly used slang word in the subcontinent “Jugaad” in its latest version.
In last month only, the dictionary has added over 1000 new words including 70 new words from the languages spoken in the subcontinent mainly from Urdu, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Gujarati.

Jugaad is listed in the dictionary as the noun and describes the meaning of the word as, “Involving the use of skills and imagination to find an easy way to solve the problem or to fix or make something using cheap basic items and method.”
There are some other interesting words that have been recognized in September revision on OED, the words include Bhindi = Vegetable, Gosht = Meat, Nai = Barber and Abba = Father.
According to Danica Salazar, the OED World English Editor who wrote release notes, “70 new words that are originating from Indian English have been added to the OED in the latest version, along with 900 words that are already in the dictionary.”
She also wrote, “Indian speed etiquettes features the complex system of terms of address, kinship terms in which status, family relationships, age, and gender are marked by highly specific vocabulary which has no direct substitutes in English.”
