Apple Halts Vision Pro Production Amid Low Sales

Apple has reportedly stopped production of its first-generation Vision Pro headset following disappointing sales figures. The mixed-reality device, which launched in February 2024, struggled to meet expectations despite the company’s initial optimism.

Production reportedly began scaling back as early as summer 2024, with Apple stockpiling enough units to meet what turned out to be minimal demand through 2025. By November, Apple informed Luxshare Precision Co. Ltd., the Chinese factory tasked with assembling the Vision Pro, to cease production. At its peak, the factory had been producing around 1,000 units daily, but that figure was cut in half before operations fully stopped.

Sales numbers tell a sobering story. Apple anticipated selling between 700,000 and 800,000 units in the headset’s first year, but it only managed to sell 370,000 units in the first nine months. With fourth-quarter projections pointing to an additional 50,000 units sold, the total for 2024 hovers around 420,000 units—well short of initial expectations. For a company like Apple, these figures pale in comparison to the first-year sales of its flagship products like the iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch.

Several factors contributed to the Vision Pro’s struggles. At $3,499, the headset’s premium price tag proved daunting even for Apple’s loyal customer base. Additionally, limited content offerings failed to generate mass interest, dampening the device’s appeal further.

Despite this setback, Apple isn’t giving up on mixed reality. Reports suggest the company is already working on the Vision Pro 2, with rumors of a lower-cost version that could hit the market as early as 2026. With this new direction, Apple aims to refine its strategy and find a more sustainable foothold in the emerging spatial computing market.

While halting production of the Vision Pro may signal a temporary setback, Apple’s ongoing commitment to innovation suggests the company is far from abandoning its mixed-reality ambitions. Fans and analysts alike will eagerly await the next chapter in Apple’s quest for success in this space.
