Netflix: These are the new films and series in August 2025

Murder visions, pensioner detectives, pink social criticism: Netflix fills August with new films, series and Hollywood gloss. So Wednesday returns with dark prophecies, while Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan solve real criminal cases.
Wednesday Addams returns darker
Netflix relied on proven recipes of success in August 2025 and launches Wednesday’s second season. After her debut, the series about the dark daughter of the Addams Family developed into one of the largest series successes in the platform and ranks in the spectator guest directly behind the South Korean phenomenon Squid Game. Jenna Ortega again slips into the role of the Wednesday Addams, with the makers promising a new story. The plot of the new season revolves around a disturbing vision in which Wednesday looks for the death of her roommate and best friend Enid Sinclair – with herself as a cause.
This time, production benefited from a significantly higher budget and the increased trust of the streaming service. Director Tim Burton, who already shaped the first season, took over the direction of four of the eight new episodes.
Hollywood veterans as hobby detectives
Another highlight of the August program is The Thursday Murder Club, who celebrates its premiere on August 28th. The British crime comedy is based on the bestseller of the same name by Richard Osman and combines four top-class acting veterans: Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie embody pensioners who educate real murder cases in their senior residence. The film adaptation comes from director Chris Columbus, who already made a name for himself with Kevin – alone at home and the first two Harry Potter films. Columbus stages the warm -hearted Whodunit as a mixture of British humor and clever turns.
Barbie conquers the streaming universe
In addition to the series highlights, Netflix comes up with a special film coup in August: Barbie will be available on the platform on August 12th. Greta Gerwig’s satirical comedy with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling developed into one of the most discussed cinema hits of the year in 2023 and played over $ 1.4 billion worldwide. The program also includes various reality formats that underline Netflix ‘strategy of the “broad target group address”. Perfect Match returns with his third season, while Love is Blind UK starts his second season. Documentary film fans, on the other hand, can look forward to America’s team, a production about the Dallas Cowboys and their controversial owners Jerry Jones. Other newcomers are classic Batman films: Batman’s return runs from August 2, Batman Forever will follow on August 22nd. While in -house productions remain permanently available, licensed content is subject to temporary contracts and can disappear again after expiry. Many titles will therefore emigrate to the competition (e.g. Prime Video or Disney+) in September.
