OpenAI Launches ChatGPT App Platform With Spotify, Zillow, and Canva Integration

OpenAI is launching a new app era at its DevDay conference: Users can now interact directly in ChatGPT with third-party apps such as Spotify, Zillow or Canva. The new app SDK is intended to make life easier for over 800 million users.
ChatGPT becomes an app platform
OpenAI has unveiled a major expansion of its AI platform at its annual developer conference DevDay 2025. Users can now interact with various third-party applications directly in ChatGPT without having to switch between different apps. CEO Sam Altman announced the new Apps SDK, which allows developers to seamlessly integrate their services into the ChatGPT interface.
Apps are now available to all registered ChatGPT users outside the EU (but we will have them soon) on Free, Go, Plus and Pro tariffs. Pilot partners Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify and Zillow are already available today in markets where their services are offered. According to an OpenAI announcement, the new system will reach over 800 million ChatGPT users and enable a completely new way of using the app. OpenAI shows the new integration of apps in ChatGPT
The app SDK is based on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard that OpenAI uses as a technical basis. Developers can connect select data, trigger actions, and render fully interactive user interfaces directly in chat, both independently and on behalf of companies of all sizes. Paid applications can be billed via OpenAI’s recently introduced Agentic Commerce Protocol.
Intuitive operation via voice input
The integration is incredibly simple: When users start a message to ChatGPT with the name of an available app, such as “Spotify, create a playlist for my party on Friday”, ChatGPT can automatically integrate the app into the chat and use relevant context. However, the system also automatically or independently recognizes which app is best suited for the respective request. ChatGPT also proactively suggests relevant apps if they might be helpful to a user. If someone asks for a playlist for a weekend party, ChatGPT can bring up the Spotify app in conversation without the user having to explicitly ask.
This makes operation even more intuitive and reduces the learning curve for new functions. The possible uses are varied: users can start with an outline and ask Canva to turn it into a presentation, or take a course on Coursera and ask ChatGPT to explain something from the video as they watch. App submissions will be accepted for review and publication later this year. OpenAI then also wants to announce further details about the monetization of apps by developers. The company expects this to create a new ecosystem that will bring benefits for both developers and users.
Strict security and privacy policies
OpenAI has implemented comprehensive security and data protection regulations. The guidelines require that every app in ChatGPT must follow OpenAI’s Usage Guidelines, be suitable for all audiences, and adhere to partner rules for third-party integrations. This is to ensure a safe and positive experience for everyone. Each app must also contain a clear, published privacy policy, obtain user consent before connecting, and identify any actions that modify external data.
The first time you use an app, ChatGPT prompts users to connect so they are aware of what data may be shared with the app. The system therefore relies on transparency and conscious decisions by users.
