Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max Could Be The Heaviest Ever, and It’s a Deliberate Choice

With the iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple could bring the heaviest iPhone ever onto the market. It is said to weigh significantly more and be thicker than its direct predecessor. However, the flopped iPhone Air shows that design isn’t everything.

iPhone 18 Pro Max becomes a heavyweight

Apple’s slim and light iPhone Air is selling poorly, in contrast to the other models in the current series, which are setting new records. Obviously, customers care less about a compact design than about the features. New information shows that Apple is probably well aware of this fact, according to which the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro Max will be the heaviest iPhone the company has ever produced.

As leaker Instant Digital reports on Weibo (via Apple Insider), the flagship planned for September 2026 will weigh around 243 grams. That would make it heavier than the previous record holder, the iPhone 14 Pro Max with 240 grams. The iPhone 18 Pro Max would therefore be over ten grams heavier than its direct predecessor. It should also be thicker.

Technical upgrades justify additional weight

Historically, Apple has always strived to make its devices thinner and lighter. The original iPhone from 2007 weighed 135 grams and was 11.6 millimeters thick. However, with the introduction of larger displays and more powerful components, the weight continued to increase. The iPhone 6 Plus marked its first peak in 2014 at 172 grams, before the Pro Max models exceeded the 200 gram mark from 2019 onwards.

The additional weight of the iPhone 18 Pro Max could come from various technical improvements. The upcoming iPhone models are said to offer a camera upgrade and a smaller Dynamic Island, along with a powerful A20 chip and new modems. There are also rumors about a variable aperture on the Pro models. A larger battery may also contribute to the higher weight. While the iPhone Air could only offer a limited battery capacity due to its thin design, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is said to offer significantly improved battery life.

Weight is only secondary

Instead of relying on a special design, Apple continues to focus on maximum features and performance with its Pro and Pro Max models. Other manufacturers are also taking this route. Flagships from Samsung, Google and other competitors have also become heavier over the last few years due to larger batteries and better components. Of course, at some point a limit is reached where handling could suffer due to the weight of the devices. But at the moment this limit does not seem to have been reached for most users.
