‘Father of Sega consoles’ – Hideki Sato dies

Hideki Sato is dead. The Japanese engineer and interim head of the game manufacturer Sega recently died at the age of 77. Sato and his team were responsible for the development of all Sega game consoles.

Developer legend behind the most important Sega consoles

Loud matching media reports from Japan, Hideki Sato, the man behind the hardware design of the most important game consoles ever introduced by Sega, passed away last Friday, February 13, 2026. His career at Sega began in 1971 and only ended in the early 2000s. During his time at Sega, Sato saw the company evolve from a small U.S. electronics player to a heavyweight in the Japanese gaming industry, and from an arcade heavyweight to one of the largest contenders in the battle for dominance among home gaming console providers.

Sato was, among other things, involved in the development of the Sega SG-1000 before he was given the task of attacking Nintendo as head of Sega’s research and development department in 1989. After the Sega Master System, Sato and his team delivered devices like the Game Gear and of course the Sega Mega Drive and later Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast.

Despite the undoubtedly attractive console developed by Sato and his colleagues, Sega was never really able to assert itself against Nintendo and later stopped developing and selling its own game consoles. The company is now only active in the area of game development. However, the Sega Mega Drive had gigantic success, with the device selling over 30 million copies worldwide. Sega co-founder David Rosen only died in December 2025 at the age of 95.
