FritzBox 5690 XGS gets the first experimental update

Fritz is upping the ante this weekend and is bringing the FritzBox 5690 XGS to the current laboratory range for the first time. With FritzOS 8.24-130668, users who like to experiment receive a comprehensive package that bundles error corrections and detailed improvements.

Fixed many small problems

The focus is on adjustments relating to the Internet, home network and system. This is how Fritz solves problems with parental controls: Blocked standard profiles could previously ensure that devices that were actually approved no longer automatically connected to the WLAN. The display of individual access profiles has also been corrected, which in some cases incorrectly reported “No restrictions”.

The reservation of bandwidth for the home network is now working reliably again, and error handling when saving prioritization rules has been revised. After the update, the FritzBox 5690 XGS shows the status of the WAN connection and the failure protection in more detail and reliably in the online monitor. There are also improvements in interoperability with current browsers as well as expanded support for IPv6 in failover protection and for connections with fixed IP. A new addition is also a root certificate for SSL.com – once for DNS over TLS and once for encrypted VoIP telephony.

The laboratory update also clears up the home network area: Active devices with static IP addresses were sometimes listed as “inactive”, while other entries were incorrectly displayed as active. Such assignment errors, including incorrect device names, should be a thing of the past with the new version. In special scenarios, repeaters could be assigned 192.168.178.1 instead of their own address; this problem has also been resolved according to the changelog.

The most important changes

  • Parental controls and bandwidth reservations are working more reliably again, including corrected display of access profiles.
  • Online Monitor now displays WAN status, failover protection and DNS servers more correctly and in more detail.
  • Home network overview has been cleaned up: incorrect status displays, device assignments and repeater IP problems have been resolved.
  • The system has been stabilized, the update search is more robust and FritzOS updates fail less often on slow lines.
  • Additional SSL.com root certificates improve encrypted DNS (DNS over TLS) and VoIP connections.

Problem checking for new updates

There are also general stability improvements in the system and more robust error handling when searching for new updates. Users with very slow internet connections benefit from the fact that FritzOS updates are no longer so easy to cancel prematurely. AVM also simplifies the initial setup of international variants: After selecting the country and language, an additional restart is no longer necessary. Within the FritzLabor branch, FritzOS 8.24 brings further detail fixes for the FritzBox 5690 XGS.

These include, among other things, a complete display of the DNS servers in the online monitor, a corrected online counter for mobile phone connections as well as cleaning up WLAN problems and the display of inactive wireless networks. Overall, this should significantly increase stability and transparency in everyday life. In addition to the FritzBox 5690 Other cable models such as FritzBox 6660, 6591 and later 6690 and 6670 Cable were also considered. If you would like to test the laboratory updates, you can download them as usual on the Fritz laboratory page.
