Microsoft is planning much-needed search improvements
Microsoft is overhauling Windows 11 as part of a new quality offensive. The Windows search should also be revised and become slimmer and faster. In addition, web content could be banned from the results.
Microsoft’s new quality offensive
Microsoft is subjecting its current Windows 11 operating system to a comprehensive overhaul. The aim of the quality offensive, for which a special team has apparently been put together, is to align the software more closely with the users’ specific wishes and requirements. After ongoing criticism of the performance and range of functions, the company now wants to specifically improve the areas that are used particularly frequently in everyday life.
The focus of the developments appears to be the central search function. Windows product manager Tali Roth announced that Microsoft will be overhauling search. In the future, it should work in a much leaner and more focused manner than was previously the case. The development team is responding to complaints about slow response times and confusing results.
Focus on local files
How Windows Latest reports, Microsoft is planning a strategic change of direction. In the past, web search was deeply integrated into Windows Search. This often led to delays and unwanted results from the Internet. In the future, local apps, settings and documents should again receive absolute priority.
In the eyes of many users, the development of the search function in Windows had already gone in the wrong direction in the past. For example, Microsoft tried to permanently integrate the digital assistant Cortana into Windows 10. However, this was not well received by users and was later revised. Web content in search results has always caused more distraction than real added value.
Adjustments under the hood
In order to increase performance, Microsoft has to intervene deeply in the system architecture. The separation of local and web-based search queries requires adaptation of the indexing service. The service runs in the background and records all file changes. If the process works more efficiently, it saves the computer’s resources and also extends the battery life of laptops.
In addition to the search, other elements of Windows 11 are also being put to the test. The company is also planning, among other things, optimizations to the taskbar, dark mode and the removal of AI functions that are of little use. Microsoft apparently wants to strengthen the trust of users after some of the design decisions of the last few months were met with incomprehension.
It may still take a while
It is currently unclear when exactly a new search function will be available to all users. So far, Roth has only confirmed that they are looking into the issue and planning changes. Microsoft also usually first tests extensive system adjustments in detail in the Windows Insider program. Only when the testers involved no longer find any critical errors will global delivery via regular function updates take place. An introduction is therefore not expected until the second half of 2026 at the earliest.
