One UI 8.5: Big Galaxy update is now available for older models

After the start of the rollout for One UI 8.5, Samsung is now also bringing the update to older Galaxy smartphones. Owners of an S23 can now look forward to Android 16 and many new functions, but they also have to accept compromises when it comes to AI features.

Update wave reaches older flagships

After internal tests started in December 2025, Samsung finally started distributing One UI 8.5 at the beginning of May. First, the Galaxy S25 series and the manufacturer’s newer foldables received the revised user interface. A few days ago the update started in Germany for the Galaxy S24. The update is now also available for even older devices. Samsung is now distributing the firmware based on Android 16 to owners of a device in the S23 series. The starting signal for the global rollout has been given, meaning that after Korean customers, users in Germany can now also download One UI 8.5.

The approximately four gigabyte data package with the firmware number S91xBXXU9FZDP brings optical and technical innovations. For participants in the previous beta program, the download is significantly smaller at around 300 megabytes.

Smart features and lack of AI

The system offers a revised design with new visual effects as well as a fully customizable quick panel. The focus is also on artificial intelligence. As SamMobile reports that the voice assistant Bixby is receiving a major upgrade. By integrating Perplexity, the software processes natural language better. Image editing also benefits. The Photo Assist function now allows improved image generation. However, the update does not bring all new features to the former flagships. According to the leaked changelog, the Galaxy S23 Ultra lacks some AI features that Samsung introduced with the S26 series. These include Call Screening, Creative Studio and the improved audio eraser. Users will probably also have to do without the hoped-for AirDrop support. The manufacturer often justifies such limitations in older models with the lack of performance of the installed SoCs.

Further innovations and installation

Aside from the big innovations, the update provides many small improvements for everyday life. The Samsung Health application now integrates medication trackers into weekly reports and the Clock app gets a handy time zone converter. Third-party service integration has also been stabilized at the system level, which should reduce app crashes in the future. In order to complete the installation successfully, developers recommend charging the smartphone to at least 30 percent in advance. It is also advisable to create a backup copy of important personal data. Users can check the availability of One UI 8.5 directly in the system settings under Software Update. However, since the distribution takes place in waves, in specific cases it is possible that it will take a few days until the update is available on the smartphone.
