Galaxy users beware: Samsung is cutting off OneDrive sync in the photo gallery

Last year it became known that Samsung wanted to stop backing up photos from its in-house photo gallery app on Android-based Galaxy series devices using Microsoft’s OneDrive cloud storage service. Now Microsoft has confirmed the cut.
OneDrive photos will soon ‘disappear’ from Samsung Gallery
It should be said right away that it has been clear for some time that Samsung wants to abandon support for OneDrive backups in the Gallery app that comes with its Galaxy smartphones and tablets. Corresponding information had already emerged during a code analysis of the app last year. As Windows Central announced this week that Microsoft is the operator of OneDrive now officially confirmed that the OneDrive connection in the Samsung Gallery app will be discontinued effective September 30, 2026. From this date, Microsoft’s OneDrive will no longer be the standard cloud provider for cloud backup of photos and videos from Samsung’s Gallery app. Samsung smartphone users should now check the settings for backing up photos and videos from the Gallery app to make sure that there is no longer any synchronization with OneDrive and that the in-house solution introduced by Samsung is activated. If you don’t check this in time, you may have to live with the fact that images and videos that were only saved via OneDrive will no longer appear in Samsung’s Gallery app from September 30th.
The connection is cut, photos remain in OneDrive
However, the content stored via OneDrive will not automatically be lost after September 30, 2026 because Microsoft does not simply delete Galaxy users’ pictures. Instead, after logging in with your Microsoft account, you can continue to access it via the OneDrive app or the OneDrive website, for example to back it up locally at a later date. Using the OneDrive app, Galaxy device users will continue to be able to have their photos and videos synchronized with Microsoft’s cloud service if they prefer. However, this must be set up accordingly via the OneDrive app, as is also possible on various other Android-based devices.
Samsung and Microsoft introduced OneDrive synchronization from Samsung’s Gallery app in 2019 and 2020, respectively, as part of closer cooperation between the two companies. Back then, they teamed up to bring Galaxy devices and Windows PCs closer together with features like Windows Phone Link. This partnership now seems to be crumbling, especially since Phone Link under Windows now also better supports the devices of other smartphone manufacturers.
