Spider-Noir canceled: Prime Video ends the new Marvel series
Amazon Prime Video is discontinuing the elaborate Marvel series Spider-Noir with Nicolas Cage after just one season. Although the project started with strong viewership, the enormous production costs did not justify a continuation.
Prime Video is canceling Spider-Noir
Amazon Prime Video and the broadcaster MGM+ have canceled the series Spider-Noir after just one season. The eight episodes starring Nicolas Cage as aging private detective Ben Reilly in 1930s New York premiered in May 2026. Despite initially strong interest and good reviews (92 and 89 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), the streaming provider has now decided against continuing the project. The decision is said to be based on an unbalanced relationship between production costs and viewership. Although the show achieved around 2.6 billion viewing minutes in the first six weeks, the audience quickly dwindled thereafter.
The production was also expensive because viewers could seamlessly choose between a color and a black and white version. On the plus side, however, there are good reviews from critics and fans as well as eleven Emmy nominations. Ultimately, however, that was not enough to economically justify the expenses for further seasons.
Future of Sony cooperation
As Variety reports, Spider-Noir was the first series released from an extensive agreement between Sony and Amazon. A previously planned series about the (Spider-Man spin-off) heroine Silk was canceled during development. Nevertheless, according to current plans, the companies continue to work together. Another project from the Marvel Universe is about to be officially ordered. Exactly which characters are the focus of this new production remains unclear. Both companies hope that this will lead to a long-term, profitable collaboration in the streaming segment.
Cinema successes and Cage’s return
Sony has owned the film and television rights to Spider-Man and over 900 other characters since 1999. At that time, the studio acquired the licenses from the then-insolvent comic publisher for around seven million dollars (around six million euros). Contracts require Sony to regularly produce new content. Otherwise, the company loses the exclusive usage rights to the figures. While the foray into the series world ended, the feature films remain extremely lucrative for Sony. The current film Spider-Man: Brand New Day grossed almost 2.3 billion dollars (around 2 billion euros) worldwide.
Fans of Nicolas Cage don’t have to completely miss out on his portrayal. He will be heard again as a dark detective in the upcoming animated film Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse next year. Work on the film is progressing well and a theatrical release is firmly planned. Is it a shame about the series or is it the right decision by Amazon.
