Exchange offer: Amazon’s cheapest new Kindle has a problem

Amazon launched its new Kindle readers just a few days ago. Even the cheapest version had a decent upgrade, but now some users are reporting a problem with so-called “light bleed”.

Light bleed as a result of the new design

The cheapest edition of the latest generation of Amazon Kindle has a “light bleed” problem, which is ultimately due to the changed design. Amazon has confirmed the phenomenon whereby shadows or a glowing border may be visible around the displayed content when using the Kindle in Dark Mode in a dark environment with maximum lighting brightness.

Unlike before, the new Kindle uses a completely flat display cover with a protective layer of glass, as has long been known from smartphones, tablets and an increasing number of notebooks. However, if you use the device in “dark mode”, the new design can mean that the light from the lighting is clearly visible, like some Reddit users noticed.

Amazon weighs it down, but also offers an exchange

Amazon confirmed the problem, according to the blog Good e-reader and explained that it can occur on some new devices, regardless of the color or case material of the respective Kindle. A company spokesperson clarified that “edge shadows” and “variations in side lighting” can be quite normal for e-readers with flat front covers. However, clearly visible “light bleeding” is often classified as a defect, especially in dark mode. Anyone who notices severe cases of light bleed on their device can have the respective model exchanged, it said. In a further statement from the Android Authority

However, Amazon explained that “glow” in the edges of the respective e-book was certainly expected. Amazon apparently made a kind of compromise in order to achieve a colored design of the display edge. The “problem” only occurs when the device is used in a dark environment, in dark mode and with the lighting at maximum brightness. We recommend that users who find this effect disturbing turn down the lighting when using their device in dark mode.
