Xbox deal for GTA 6: Report turns out to be false

A supposedly exclusive streaming deal between Microsoft and Rockstar Games gave PC gamers hope that they would be able to play Grand Theft Auto 6 via Xbox Cloud Gaming upon release. But the euphoria only lasted until Microsoft spoke up.

Short dream about the PC release

A supposedly exclusive streaming deal between Microsoft and Rockstar Games raised hopes for PC access to Grand Theft Auto 6 on Wednesday night. Accordingly, the game should also be playable on the PC when it launches on November 19th. However, the report turned out to be false. The action game will initially only be released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The trigger was an internal employee meeting at Microsoft.

There, Xbox boss Asha Sharma announced an unusual step towards Grand Theft Auto 6 that “no other platform operator is taking”. This led to the assumption that Microsoft had secured exclusive streaming rights. Because Xbox titles can usually be streamed via the browser on PCs, access for PC gamers also seemed possible. Preload on consoles begins on November 12th.

Quick denial from Microsoft

Reports The Verge In a correction to the original report about streaming, Xbox strategy chief Matthew Ball disagreed on the X platform: Grand Theft Auto 6 will neither be offered exclusively in streaming nor streamed on PCs. The Verge then suggested that a possible agreement could be limited to streaming within the Xbox ecosystem. Web browsers and common apps could therefore be excluded. Rockstar Games had already chosen an unusual approach to marketing. The first detailed gameplay video appeared exclusively on Netflix at the end of August and only hours later on YouTube. Microsoft is now changing its cloud offering from November. The previous flat rate is replaced by a monthly hourly quota.

New limits in Game Pass

The Ultimate subscription for 21 euros will contain 15 hours, the Premium subscription for 13 euros offers ten hours and the Essential level for nine euros allows five hours of playing time per month. Microsoft is also planning a purchase option for gaming hours without a subscription. Meanwhile, PC gamers will have to continue to wait for a native version of Grand Theft Auto 6, even though Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick emphasized the growing importance of the platform.
