Google gives US schools no choice: AI search or no search at all

Google wants to block American schools from access to its regular internet search if they are not willing to also expose their students to the technology company’s AI services. The justification seems outrageous.

Google is closing the (AI) bag

Google offers a range of software and service packages for the education sector in the USA, which it markets as part of a platform called “Classroom”. The package, which includes Gmail, Google Docs and other well-known products, is used in many places in the United States in so-called “K-12” schools, i.e. in primary and secondary schools up to the 12th grade.

The “Classroom” offering has such a large market share there that Google apparently sees an opportunity to boost the usage figures for its AI services this way. In any case, this suspicion could arise if you look at them today New York Times Hearing an announcement that Google no longer wants to make its web search available to schools as part of “Classroom” if they do not also use the AI services that are part of the Internet company’s educational offerings.

Classroom: Google promises schools more control

Today, Google actually announced a number of innovations related to Classroom with which the company wants to give schools, teachers and parents more control over the use of AI services in lessons. Classroom should only contain AI tools if the respective school administrators explicitly activate this.

The innovation, which is due to be introduced from the beginning of 2027, has a catch. If Google Classroom’s AI services are deactivated, web search will no longer be accessible to students at the respective educational institutions. Users will then be shown a corresponding message stating that web search is not available in the respective case, according to the company.

Google says AI and search are too closely intertwined

As a reason for this, Chris Phillips, Vice President for Education at Google, points to the now very close integration of AI and search services. Because there is extensive integration of web search and AI services, they can apparently no longer be offered separately. Google began making AI features standard in the Classroom app for K-12 schools in the US in August, drawing some criticism from educational institutions. It should be left to the schools themselves whether they want to actively use Google’s AI services. Google is now reversing these changes, but is subject to the conditions described above.

From the beginning of 2027, students in the USA will only be able to work with two versions of Google’s “Search”. One edition corresponds to what many users know from the publicly available current edition of Google Search – including the AI overviews and AI chats that Google now forces on all users. The other variant is a search with the student version of the AI chatbot Gemini, known as “Guided Learning”.
