Departure after three months: Xbox manager defends herself against rumors

Xbox COO Helen Chiang, who suddenly left her job, has denied reports that she had to leave Microsoft because of a violation of company policies. Her departure still raises questions.

Lots of denials, no explanation

In a statement on LinkedIn, the long-time Microsoft employee described the representations currently circulating as inaccurate. However, why she actually left the company remains unclear. Chiang left Microsoft after 21 years at Microsoft, having taken over as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Xbox division just three months earlier. Xbox boss Asha Sharma informed the workforce of her departure last week. The portal Eurogamer subsequently reported, citing a single source, that Chiang had been fired for a “policy violation.”

Now the former manager contradicts this representation. “There has been some speculation about my abrupt departure from Microsoft, including claims that I was fired for a policy violation,” wrote Chiang. That is not true. Although she did not want to publish a detailed chronology of her departure, she emphasized that her silence should not be understood as agreement with the allegations circulating. In her contribution, Chiang also denied a number of possible wrongdoings. Accordingly, she neither disclosed confidential company information to the press nor committed discrimination, bullying, harassment, insider trading, embezzlement or other fraudulent acts. A move to a competing company was also not the reason for her departure. Nor did she leave Microsoft because she was passed over for an internal promotion.

Microsoft is silent

However, she left it open whether Chiang resigned himself or was fired by Microsoft. She also did not provide any specific information about the circumstances of her departure. She just wants to prevent her farewell from being reduced to a false story about a lack of competence, professional ambition or a particularly serious scandal. Rather, it’s about staying true to her own values, especially when this is difficult. That is the legacy she wants to leave behind. “This is how I never imagined my story at Microsoft would end. And it’s not the whole story,” Chiang concluded. The company itself did not comment on the matter. This means that the surprising departure of the experienced Xbox manager remains unexplained.
