New Patent: Microsoft Surface To Feature Four Under-Display Cameras
Microsoft has patented a new concept for the integration of four cameras in its mobile hardware products, in which one wants to arrange the sensors in such a way that they correspond to the Microsoft logo. It remains to be seen whether this concept will ever be used.
As LetsGoDigital discovered, Microsoft is working on a new concept for integrating four camera sensors in a smartphone or tablet. Not only do you want to install separate cameras for each color spectrum, but you also want to arrange them so that they externally form the Microsoft logo.
Basically, the approach is to install one camera sensor each with color filters for capturing red, green, blue, and yellow. As usual, the software on the respective end device should then process the data recorded by the sensors together with the signal processor and combine them into a photo.
Microsoft wants to use technologies from the field of computational photography, which corresponds to the usual standard in today’s times. What is curious, however, is what Microsoft wants to do when the cameras are not in use. Due to their arrangement in a square, they should also form a kind of Microsoft logo, which is also known to be composed of four “tiles”.

Interestingly, Microsoft is even considering using the square camera array, which even stands for the individual colors of the company logo with its filters, as a kind of under-display front camera. When not in use, the cameras should then be hidden behind a Microsoft logo or a kind of notification light shown on the display above.
Microsoft’s patent describes the use of the concept not only in a smartphone but also in notebooks or desktop monitors and tablets. For the time being, however, the whole thing will remain a mind game. The patent was applied for in 2019 but has only now been published. It is more than doubtful whether a finished product will ever appear in which the patent is actually implemented.
