A rumor suggests that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature 48MP telephoto lens

It is a bit strange to cover the information regarding the iPhone 17 series when the launch of the iPhone 16 series is months away. Well, we have one piece of information that revolves around the iPhone 17 Pro Max. A 48-megapixel telephoto lens is expected to be included on the iPhone 17 Pro Max, according to Jeff Pu, an analyst covering Apple supply chain businesses.

The upgraded 48-megapixel telephoto lens on the iPhone 17 Pro Max will be optimized for use with Apple’s upcoming Vision Pro headset, which is scheduled for release in the United States in early 2024. The information comes from a research note Pu wrote this week with Hong Kong-based investment firm Haitong International Securities. The note focused on Apple supplier Largan Precision. No further details were shared by Pu regarding the lens. He didn’t mention how it would work with the Vision Pro.

When it comes to the iPhone 15 Pro models, the smartphones feature a 48MP primary camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and a 12MP telephoto lens. These devices can capture spatial video with 3D depth for the Vision Pro to playback, starting with iOS 17.2. The main and ultra-wide lenses work together to record spatial video with more depth when held in a landscape position.

Besides this, in early 2023, Jeff Pu claimed that the Pro models of the iPhone 16 will feature a 48MP ultra-wide lens. From this point of view, we can anticipate that the iPhone 17 Pro Max might be the first iPhone model to feature a camera system based on 48MP lenses. More megapixels provide images with greater detail, which is advantageous for printing and cropping.

Since the iPhone 17 Pro versions aren’t anticipated to be released until September 2025, which is still almost two years away, Apple may not have finalized its plans.
